Why I Do What I Do…

One of my favourite birth quotes is by Barbara Katz Rothman, a sociology professor and author of many pregnancy, labour and motherhood books:

“Birth is not just about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.”

Those two phrases that I have emphasised – “trust themselves” and “inner strength” are SO important. I have an open minded and open hearted view of pregnancy, birth and parenting – there is no one size fits all, there are personalities and preferences, there are interventions that are needed and others that are simply wanted (and that’s okay!). However, the one thing that I feel strongly about is that a lot of pregnancy, birth and parenting has been taken outside of ourselves in modern times.

Birth to me means allowing a woman and her motherly instincts to guide the process. Birth is supporting a woman in listening to her body and the signs it is giving her. I believe each baby chooses their journey. Birth is believing that your body is doing exactly what it needs to for this baby and this birth. Birth is welcoming a brand new life to the world.

A woman’s pregnancy and birth is one of the most important times in her and her family’s lives, and one they will remember forever. It’s a new chapter, a new life, an opportunity to learn and grow.

So why Birth Tribe? Birth Tribe was born of my passion for choice, for information and for parents to have the best birth experience and journey into parenthood as possible. It takes a tribe to raise a child, to make a mother. That tribe should support you in trusting your own instincts, and believe in the signs your body is giving you. Your birth experience and those early moments of parenthood stay with you forever. Your experience has a lasting effect on your relationships with your baby and your family, and can formulate attitudes towards yourself and any future births.

We no longer live in a world where our tribe is easily accessible, where skills are passed down from mother to mother, where a close family unit are at hand, and the belief in the power of our own bodies is sacrosanct. The further that science advances, the less we trust in the natural abilities of our body, the things they were made and designed to do. Pregnancy and birth are often treated as an illness, not a remarkable and natural process. We have blindly handed our bodies over to medical professionals, who whilst holding valuable skills should anything go wrong, have much less knowledge about the normal, natural workings of our individual bodies, than us – the owners.

I believe that if every woman put as much time and effort into preparing for her pregnancy and birth as she does into her wedding day, the world would be a much better place. A better birth experience is of great psychological importance in a woman’s life, and I feel that every woman and the family around her deserve the chance to participate in their optimum birth experience.

To do so requires time. It takes some research and a period of getting to know yourself. To recognise and listen to your intuition, and to seek out those who will support you.

This is why Birth Tribe – because I want women and families to feel that they can have that kind of support, even if they live away from their family, if maybe they have recently had to move away from friends. I will support and provide a place for you to find your tribe. The attitude towards pregnancy and birth are changing, people are realising that nature did not design a flawed process and that normal birth (“without induction, without the use of instruments, not by caesarean section and without general, spinal or epidural anaesthetic before or during delivery”) is not only desirable, but completely achievable.

Whether you feel you have no current knowledge when it comes to pregnancy and birth, or your pretty researched and would love to be a part of a group and learn more, hear other points of view, Birth Tribe is for you. Whether you are having a planned caesarean, have recently been advised a caesarean is your best option, are planning a homebirth or don’t know where you want to birth yet – Birth Tribe is about empowering you in your choices to help you achieve the birth experience you desire and support you in becoming parents.
